Software process improvement: where is the evidence?

چکیده
Software process improvement (SPI) is around for decades: frameworks are proposed, success factors are studied, and experiences have been reported. However, the sheer mass of concepts, approaches, and standards published over the years overwhelms practitioners as well as researchers. What is out there? Are there new emerging approaches? What are open issues? Still, we struggle to answer the question for what is the current state of SPI and related research? We present initial results from a systematic mapping study to shed light on the field of SPI and to draw conclusions for future research directions. An analysis of 635 publications draws a big picture of SPI-related research of the past 25 years. Our study shows a high number of solution proposals, experience reports, and secondary studies, but only few theories. In particular, standard SPI models are analyzed and evaluated for applicability, especially from the perspective of SPI in small-to-medium-sized companies, which leads to new specialized frameworks. Furthermore, we find a growing interest in success factors to aid companies in conducting SPI. This summary refers to the paper Software Process Improvement: Where Is the Evidence? [Ku15]. This paper was published as full research paper in the ICSSP’2015 proceedings.

The improvement of nursing students’ search skills through teaching evidence-based databases
Abstract Introduction: Nurses must possess searching skills to provide high quality patient care and perform evidence-based nursing process. Therefore, the current study focused on the effect of teaching evidence-based databases on nursing studentschr('39') search skills. Methods: This was an applied semi-experimental study in which a one group pretest–posttest design was used. In this study, p...
متن کاملEvidence Based Medicine: Clinical Trials
Evidence based medicine is very important for success of modern medicine. It is the ongoing process of using the most reliable evidence from clinical studies, scientific understanding and medical practice to make the best possible medical choice for patients. Evidence based medicine is how medicine advances and how we get improvements in life expectancy and quality of life. It not only identifi...
متن کاملA DMAIC approach for process capability improvement an engine crankshaft manufacturing process
The define–measure–analyze–improve–control (DMAIC) approach is a five-strata approach, namely DMAIC. This approach is the scientific approach for reducing the deviations and improving the capability levels of the manufacturing processes. The present work elaborates on DMAIC approach applied in reducing the process variations of the stub-end-hole boring operation of the manufacture of cra...
متن کاملAn iterative improvement process for agile software development
Agile software development of short iterative cycles offers an opportunity for rapid, visible and motivating software process improvement (SPI). The agile principles suggest the regular reflections of agile project teams for improving the efficiency and adaptation of the process. However, current literature provides little support or empirical evidence for conducting such improvement efficientl...
متن کاملOperator agency in process intervention: tampering versus application of tacit knowledge
Statistical process control (SPC) theory takes a negative view of adjustment of process settings, which is termed tampering. In contrast, quality and lean programmes actively encourage operators to acts of intervention and personal agency in the improvement of production outcomes. This creates a conflict that requires operator judgement: How does one differentiate between unnecessary tampering ...
